Tiverton Town Council would like to welcome you to our web site
www.tiverton-town-council.org.

As a Town Council, we are custodians of the Town's civic and ceremonial traditions and are proud to ensure their continuation.

If you search through our pages you will find details of the Regalia and the origins of the Town Crest. In our role as elected Members you will also find details of how we have decided to spend the monies passed to us by the ratepayers of the Town.

We manage a commercial Hall which is also detailed in the following pages together with a large number of Allotment sites, now regaining their previous popularity. Details of the Councillors currently serving the Town are also included and you may contact them directly or route your enquiries through the Council's Offices.

The Town of Tiverton

Tiverton is located in the heart of Devon, some 14 miles north east of the County Town of Exeter. Closer, there are the towns of Cullompton (9 miles) and Crediton (15 miles).

Tiverton lies at the junction of two important road routes, the A361 and the A393. The A361 (North Devon Link Road) provides alink between the M5 Motorway and the North Devon towns of Barnstaple and Bideford. The A393 links Exeter with Minehead.

Tiverton is served by a rail link (Tiverton Parkway) which lies some 4 miles outside of the Town with Bus and Taxi services completing the route.

Tiverton enjoys two beatiful rivers, the Exe and the Lowman which join just south of the Town Centre. It also boasts a canal whos starting point is within the Town. From this basin visitors can experience trips in barges traveling through idyllic scenery.

Tiverton has a number of important scheduled ancient monuments. in its vicinity. Cranmore Castle, the burial mounds at Craze Lowman, Long Barrow and Bolham Hill Fort are of particular importance. St Peter's Church, Tiverton Castle and the tradition of the Cloth industry are all attractions which have drawn visitors and reaserchers to the Town over the years.

Whilst Tiverton gained early importance as a ford across the River Exe in prehistoric and Roman times, little archeaological excavation has yet taken place. The Town has a unique heritage of buildings with examples of many styles and periods all reflecting its history and its varied fortunes.

The Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life offers visitors a wonderful insight into the past. Contact (01884) 256295.
